Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about HobbyAlpha — how to scan cards, what the AI verdicts mean, how eBay comps work, and how to get started for free.
What is HobbyAlpha?
HobbyAlpha helps you value your sports cards and decide what to buy, hold, or sell — using AI plus real eBay sold prices. You can scan cards, organize them into display cases, and get a clear read on each card and player.
Is it free?
Yes — most features work on the free plan. A few advanced tools are Pro (paid), and they're clearly marked. You can see exactly what's included on the Pricing page.
How do I scan a card?
From the Dashboard, click Scan, then upload or snap a photo of the front of the card. After a few seconds you'll get the player, the card details, and an estimated value.
How many scans do I get?
Free accounts get a set number of scans per day. Pro unlocks more scans and lets you scan many cards at once.
Can I add cards without a photo?
Yes. To add one card, open a display case and click Add card, then type in the details. To add a lot at once, open Import and upload your list as a CSV file.
What does Buy, Hold, or Sell mean?
These are AI-generated verdicts based on the player's career stage, market trend, supply data, and comparable card prices. Buy means the card looks undervalued relative to its upside. Hold means keep what you have but don't add. Sell (Trade the Hype) means the market may be ahead of itself.
Where do the prices come from?
HobbyAlpha pulls real eBay sold listings for your specific card — the exact player, set, parallel, and serial number — and uses those actual transaction prices as the anchor. AI fills in context when comps are thin.
